  3. Extensis Portfolio - formerly known as Fetch - is considered the
  4. media management standard among graphics profesionals. Extensis
  5. Portfolio 3.0 offers a quick, easy and efficient way to organize,
  6. browse, manage and retrieve digital content. For individuals as
  7. well as workgroups Portfolio greatly speeds up the creative
  8. process by letting users locate, access and reuse exisiting
  9. digital files.

  76. About the Demo
  77. If you have not purchased a serial number for Portfolio, you can
  78. run it as a full-functioning demo for 60 days.  After this period
  79. expires, Portfolio will convert into a Browser version.  This
  80. version only allows read-only operations, so you will not be able
  81. to create catalogs or add items to catalogs.  Additionally, the
  82. Browser only operates in a single-user setting, so you will be
  83. locked out of any networked catalog that another user is
  84. accessing.  If you do access a networked catalog, all other users
  85. will be locked out of that catalog until you close the catalog.

  146. During the launch of Portfolio, you will be requested to serialize
  147. and register the software. Please enter the serial number located
  148. on the back of the manual.  If you do not have a serial number,
  149. you can choose to run Portfolio in demo mode; demo mode allows
  150. full functionality for 60 days.

  152. Please register using one of the built-in electronic registration
  153. methods. If you do not have a modem, fax/modem, or printer, you
  154. may fill out the registration card in the back of the manual.

  157. General Notes on Portfolio use
  158. 1) Portfolio uses multiple file translation systems to generate
  159. thumbnails and preview many file types.  On the Macintosh,
  160. Portfolio will take advantage of the translation capabilities of
  161. MacOS Easy Open and QuickTime if both are installed and active.
  162. 2) File types come in many different flavors, depending on the
  163. application they were created in and the settings used when the
  164. file was saved.  Portfolio may encounter some files that it cannot
  165. generate a thumbnail for.  In these instances, Portfolio will
  166. usually substitute the file's icon as the thumbnail.  
  167. 3) When working with large images or catalogs with many items, you 
  168. may need to give Portfolio more memory. On the Macintosh you can do
  169. this by allocating more memory to the application via the Get Info
  170. dialog in the Finder. On Windows, increase the Virtual Memory
  171. cache via the System Control Panel.
  172. 4) The Missing Files dialog will only search for missing files on
  173. currently mounted volumes.  As a result, it may not show all files
  174. that have out-of-date links.
  175. 5) When converting a Fetch 1.5 catalog on the Macintosh, the file
  176. size for each item will not be displayed due to the fact that
  177. Fetch 1.5 does not store the size of each file.  To rectify this
  178. situation, simply update your Portfolio catalog after converting
  179. it from a Fetch 1.5 catalog.
  180. 6) In multi-user situations, Portfolio may display an 'Item
  181. Deleted' symbol for items that are currently being modified by
  182. another user. In this situation, simply Refreshing the gallery
  183. should remedy the problem.
  184. 7) On page 37 of the manual is a reference to a preference for
  185. Image Dimensions.  This feature is not available in this release.
  186. 8) The Macintosh keyboard shortcut CMD-OPT-M referred to on page
  187. 63 of the manual is not available in this release. To use this
  188. command, simply hold down the Option key while selecting 'Edit
  189. Original...' from the item menu.
  190. 9) In low memory situations features such as the Master Keyword
  191. List may not display correctly.  If you experience such problems,
  192. increasing the program allocated memory (on the Mac) or increasing
  193. the Virtual Memory cache (on Windows) should solve the problem.
  194. 10) On Windows, if you select a block of items to drag in a
  195. gallery, you must click-drag on the last item selected in order to
  196. drag all of the items.  Clicking on any of the other selected
  197. items will deselect the group and select just that item.  If you
  198. use Select All, click on the first item in the gallery to drag the
  199. entire contents of that gallery.
  200. 11) On Windows, there is a system limit to the number of items you
  201. can select in the Add Items file dialog. If you are trying to
  202. select the entire contents of a folder, either click on the
  203. Current Folder button or simply drag the folder or selected items
  204. onto an open gallery from the Explorer.
  205. 12) When working in a cross-platform environment, be aware of
  206. different restrictions each operating system's file system has. 
  207. For example, Mac file names can only be 31 characters long and
  208. Windows file names cannot use the following characters:  \/:*?<>| 
  209.  
  210. Failure to observe such guidelines may result in users on one
  211. platform or the other being unable to access the original files
  212. from Portfolio.
  213. 13) Portfolio can create two different types of links to local
  214. files, depending on how they are cataloged:  
  215.     (A) If you want to catalog a file so that it is sharable to
  216. other users on your network, turn on File Sharing on the Mac or
  217. add the items by accessing your local files via the Network
  218. Neighborhood on Windows.  This will place a full network path
  219. name, which allows other machines on the network to locate the
  220. files on your computer.  
  221.     (B) If you want to catalog a local path name to a file, turn
  222. off File Sharing on the Mac or catalog files directly from local
  223. drives on Windows. When this is done with removable media, users
  224. will be asked for the media to be inserted locally instead of
  225. having Portfolio attempt to access the files over a network (which
  226. may be inaccessible).  Note that files cataloged from local hard
  227. drives in this fashion will be inaccessible to other users.  This
  228. mode is particularly useful when the images are on removable media
  229. that has been given to another user.
